Travel Plan
Two Bridges Academy is committed to promoting sustainable travel options for our students, staff, and their families.
As part of our dedication to improving health, wellbeing, and the environment, we have signed up to Modeshift STARS, a national accreditation program designed to support schools in encouraging active and sustainable travel. Through this initiative, we aim to promote more active and sustainable modes of travel to reduce car journeys and encourage alternatives such as walking, cycling, scooting, and car-sharing. It also encourages children to develop an active and healthy interest in the school’s immediate environment and in the wider world around them.
Two Bridges Academy works closely with the local authority travel team and uses the Modeshift STARS system to track progress, ensuring that we meet initiatives.
As part of our work we focus on:
-Teaching our students about road safety through a programme of assemblies and activities,
-Supporting pupils in developing road awareness through 'Pedestrian Training'
-Support understanding of the risks of 'engine idling', safe parking, car sharing and alternatives to driving to school
- Encouragement of safe and viable alternatives to single occupancy car use for access to the school site.
- Provide information to help the school community to understand the benefits of active, sustainable travel and to support all members in selecting healthy, sustainable alternatives
The school proudly achieved Green level Modeshift STARS Accreditation in March 2022, for their proposed efforts to increase levels of walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable travel by developing an Approved Travel Plan. We hope to improve further this year!
We will continue to promote sustainable travel through our newsletters and website, ensuring that the entire school community is involved in creating a healthier, greener environment for everyone.

Be Bright Be Seen
At Two Bridges Academy we raise awareness about Road Safety. Sessions have taken place in school to share key messages and students watched a very helpful and informative presentation on the importance of road safety.
As part of our broader effort to spread awareness about road safety and highlight simple steps we can all take to improve visibility and safety, here are some additional tips to help your child be seen more easily during these darker months:
- Wear bright and high-visibility colours – A brightly coloured coat or jacket can make a big difference.
- High-visibility strips – These can be added to your child’s coat, bag, or even shoes.
- Fluorescent armbands – If your child has a dark coat, these are an easy and effective way to add extra visibility.
- Reflective accessories – Reflective clothing or stickers on bags are particularly important at night, as they can be seen from car and bike headlights

Road Safety and The Highway Code
The aim of The Highway Code is to promote safety on the road, whilst also supporting a healthy, sustainable and efficient transport system. It includes rules for pedestrians, including general guidance, crossing the road, crossings, and situations needing extra care.
The Highway Code sets out the Green Cross Code, which helps pedestrians make good choices when crossing the road. The Green Cross Code is a procedure that helps people cross the road safely. Children are taught to follow step-by-step instructions so that they find the safest place to cross, look and listen for cars, wait until it’s safe to cross and, ultimately, get to the other side of the road in safety. The main message of the code is 'Stop, Look, Listen, Think'.
Tales of the Road – THINK! provides resources ranging from short videos on how to cross the road safely, to interactive games that children can use to build their road safety skills. We have accessed some of these online resources, providing interactive learning.
Post 16 students have engaged in Pedestrian Training to develop their road safety knowledge. They have been offsite with a member of South Gloucestershire Council Road Safety Team to explore the roads around the school and discuss safe and unsafe places to cross. They discussed how to identify safer crossing points and The Green Cross Code.
